As of May 8, 2026, Instagram has officially removed end-to-end encryption for direct messages (DMs) globally, meaning parent company Meta can access and read the content of your conversations, including text, images, and voice notes. While they likely don't monitor every message, the technical ability to do so now exists. This is a big deal for me because i vent a lot there.

I'm not sure it matters anyway. Coworkers brought up the fact that ads are still populating on their feeds/socials for stuff they talk about IRL... which means every time they talk to me the conversation is bugged. I don't use those products yet I still get to partake.
