Who is 'we'? Google is the only American tech megacorp that I've used in the long term. And I've started cutting them out too.

I think the actual hacking world is shielded well enough from the hoodie+MatrixScreensaver fluff to keep both camps happy (normies vs actual computer dorks).

I've done the Pixel phone, mostly because they were the 'underdog' in the phone sphere. I might go back at some point if I get comfortable with the idea of loading GrapheneOS or something.

Fair. Doesn't have to be 100% worthless, I've found usable conversation in the Yahoo comments sections of all places.

I switched to Ecosia for regular searches. I just wish they didn't use Micro$oft/BingAPIs for ads. I only use google for reverse image searches and the occasional translation.

What's the timeline on that? It was true when Android first came out, but I don't think they had any hardware in the pipeline at that point. I thought they had already achieved market dominance quite handily by the time Pixel was announced.

That's fair, Google and Alphabet (corporate) were plenty big by then. At least I didn't go with the Amazon Fire phone, that was DOA if I remember correctly :D.

more than half of the posts on HN are bots, so I would take them less seriously than any anonymous poster

they decided to shut it down to hide the return of George Floyd in the form of George Droyd. and it worked pretty well as you can see.

Does ecosia have those AI summaries clogging up the results?

They have a simple toggle to turn them off.

I'm not sure, one of their stated goals is to be a carbon responsible search engine, and not generating AI results when users have them disabled would certainly be a key way to achieve that.
