Topic: Bad Idea Right by Olivia Rodrigo is a good tune but it also owes everything to Avril Lavigne

It struck me earlier when it appeared on my Youtube recommendeds - the demographic it's aimed at are so young as to have no frame of reference. From the talk-sing narrative vocals in the verses to the cheerleader-type chorus, this is what Avril Lavigne was doing 25 years ago but fans of Olivia Rodrigo likely have no idea who she even is because they were only born last decade.
It's off my chest now.

There's an entire sub-genre of pop music right now that's borrowing that style - I don't hate it. It's mostly devoid of that mainline R&B nonsense the biggest acts use. Sometimes they mix in actual guitars or drums and that's pretty swell.

And as a side note, the later albums tend to be more my jam, after they did a bunch of drugs and stop singing about highschool stuff. So album number 3 or 4 is where it's at 8).

I have noticed that nu metal seems to be coming back as well

I picked up the 2023 album on the recommendation; thanks fren. I passed on the live album that just came out though... probably a better experience actually seeing it live.

Surprisingly, yes! Interesting to watch the next generation reaching for sounds their parents had and not rejecting it outright.
