The language conversation is amusing. You're arguing about Romance languages with a Roman alphabet about islands where Gaelish is still spoken by a few. The Romans didn't create the alphabets but missionaries adapted it to the languages and the Latin was used in Liturgy and higher education.

French was the official language of the upper classes until Henry V. I like to helpfully point this out to English friends, as well as how complex words and concepts so often have French/Latin origin. Absent the Normans, England would be some weird Danish hybrid.
