Topic: Chinese propaganda

There have been a few times on the internet where I came across Chinese propaganda that was intended for people inside China. I saw one video about Xi Jinping talking to some farmers and another that was about women in the Chinese navy. I would expect that inside China, because China is authoritarian, they would want to make their military seem serious and tough and they would want to make their leader seem strong and ruthless the way Americans look at say Trump and want him to seem like a strong asshole and not as a nice person. Americans want a president that looks intimidating and mean because it shows power and strength. So I thought in an authoritarian country it would be like that but on steroids. Except, I as surprised the way they portrayed Xi Jinping was like this nice friendly docile humble guy who’s just walking casually and letting the farmers show him around and he’s just here to see what’s going on and do what he can do to help. And then the Chinese navy one, it didn’t even feel like watching a video of people who were in the military, the vibe wasn’t the super serious like, "we are prepared to die for our country and defeat the enemy" it was more like, "this is what we do on patrol here on our boat! :D"

Maybe it’s something about Chinese culture I don’t understand, why the government in China would try to not seem intimidating, but I was really surprised by that. If Donald Trump made a video like that video I saw promoting Xi Jinping, I don’t think anybody would take him very seriously. It was overwhelmingly positive though, to the point it wears pretty shameless. "Hey everybody! Look how humble I am while I’m lifting everybody out of poverty. My plan for our country is going to fix everything! I’m the best leader in so many years! Blah blah blah, I’m great, I just care about people!"

I just find it interesting that that’s the image he’s going for.

Although now that I think about it, when I watched Triumph of the Will in college, they made Hitler seem that way. Like Hitler was just a nice friendly guy who just cares about his country and wanted to make sure everyone had work and all the young boys had values and wanted peace and blah blah blah. They only said like one racist sentence in Mein Kampf about "polluting our blood."

Triumph of the will is interesting though because the woman who made that propaganda film, later in life she decided to try and redeem herself of her sins by making a photo book of pictures of naked black guys. (It’s true look it up.)

Like literally this woman went from hanging out with Hitler to going on down to Africa to take pictures of some African tribe and write about how erotic these strong naked black men that don’t care about women and only care about being skilled fighters are. Is it horrible and racist? Yes. But it is a little funny that a white lady hanging out with Hitler decided she wanted to take some pictures of black dudes dicks after the war was over? A little bit. It’s a little bit funny.

Asian promotional psychology in general seems to be fairly inverse to the way we do it in the west. North Korea seems to be the one outlier.
