Topic: PS2 hardware issue

TLDR: PS2 recognises but can't read PSX/audio CDs, is there a component for PSX emulation that has broken/any fixes?
I recently went to a local gaming cafe and bought used copies of NFS Most Wanted and the PS Platinum edition of Final Fantasy VII (3 discs + FFVIII demo disc). These were tested before purchase and worked without any issues.
Disc 1 of FFVII could be recognised and booted, and the system made its disc-drive sounds for an abnormally long time before reaching the PSX logo screen. Then it continued for another few minutes before the drive seemingly gave up and then nothing else. The demo disc was the same despite being much less damaged.
I knew it had a similar situation with audio CDs, getting as far as the player menu but unable to play anything, so I think there's a single component for emulating the PSX that is now broken?
PS2 discs and DVDs work fine.

I remember when I was a kid I had a friend who still had a ps2. I’m 21 and it was old even back then. Retro gaming.
