I’ve gotten bad reactions from some people for mentioning I’m interested in taking Mandarin. The whole political situation between the US and China is pretty bad right now, but by the time I’m 40, Trump, Xi, and Putin will all be dead anyway. So how much does it really matter?

Huh, from whom exactly? Learning Chinese, Korean and Japanese is worth it though.

Just in general, Americans are pretty anti Chinese. There are two groups of people: people who don’t like the government, and then people who don’t like the culture. There’s usually some level of plausible deniability though.

I was trying to convince myself to learn Japanese instead since Japan has a better relationship with the United States. But the confusing part about that is that people say Japanese people are racist, but white Americans generally view Japan very positively. Although I’ve met way more Chinese Americans so I have a better idea of them than I do of the Japanese. Then Japan is also like 10x smaller than China. Which is still a lot of people, but idk. I think I’m probably less ideological about the thing than most people.

Tbh I’m not interested in China because of some sexual fetish or something. I just think it’s an interesting country with a lot of people. Also, I think it’s interesting because of technology with the whole parallel they have to western tech companies with their domestic software and hardware manufacturers.

You usually focus too much on the political aspect of things that are somewhat trivial (which generalizes to a simplistic worldview) rather than digesting the substance itself.

A lot of the rhetoric is about war though. It seems like the US is trying to distance itself from its own allies. So if the US considers China to be an adversary, it does make me uncomfortable on some level. Like I don’t think I’d get arrested in Japan for example. But there have been problems with Americans getting arrested in China and also Chinese people (oftentimes international students) getting arrested / interrogated / deported at airports in America. Obviously, not everything in life is politics, but it does kinda matter.

Then there’s also the trend of generally, even though there are a lot of Chinese international students in the United States, the number is declining, and universities in the United States have been getting rid of connections to China. It’s not like terrible yet or anything, but the trend seems to be that it will get worse not better.

Then Trump said something recently about wanting to ban people who are "Marxist" from entering the United States, and China is ruled by a communist party.
