I’m Catholic, but something that doesn’t make sense to me is that Communism is banned by Catholicism as an ideology, and the Communist Party of China (technically CPC not CCP but Americans call it the CCP for a petty reason if you look into it) is fundamentally atheist. Yet, Catholicism is one of the officially recognized religions in China, and the Russian Orthodox Church isn’t, and Judaism isn’t. The CCP lumps all Protestant churches together has one religion "Protestantism." So Catholicism is actually the only individual denomination of Christianity that is recognized by the CCP. Even though there are hardly any Catholics in China at all and they contradict ideologically. It’s a very curious thing.

Apparently the CCP under Mao made their own "Chinese Catholic Church" where bishops were chosen by the CCP. But then under Xi Jinping, the pope started commenting on bishops in China who weren’t living by the standards of a priest (some of them had wives). So then they struck some kind of deal so that the Catholic Church in China is considered an official part of the global Catholic Church, and the pope in Rome can excommunicate bishops inside of China, and the pope has some level (not clear what level) of say over who becomes a bishop in China, as long as the CCP also approves it. But it’s not clear exactly why the CCP, which is fundamentally atheist, would even concede that in theory when they’re fundamentally atheist communists and communism is banned in Catholicism.

It’s like, if ayatollah of Iran came out and said that atheism is officially recognized in Iran… that would be pretty weird and confusing.
