Topic: God

So in general I’m left wing, and left wing people tend to be anti religious (in the United States right now anyway). They act like religion is a taboo topic or something and you shouldn’t talk about it. I’ve thought about it though, I’m Catholic, but I wasn’t raised very religiously, so I didn’t come to this through religious doctrine, I think that God probably exists. I believe in science and evolution and the Big Bang and all of that. I’m not a science denier or anything. But I’ve listened to arguments that atheists make on the internet against religion, and I think the problem is, atheists don’t really separate religion from God. They say, "religious people did bad things, therefore religion is bad, and if religion is bad and religion says God exists then God doesn’t exist." But I feel like that line of thinking is logically fallacious. The existence of God isn’t dependent on the behavior of people who believe in the existence of God. Just logically, that can’t be how it works. Really it seems like most people who are atheists have something against religion, and then tell themselves that the idea of God is silly. But if you actually seriously think about it, how is the idea of God silly? The universe exists. What is God defined as? The creator of the universe. So if the universe exists, it seems impossible for something to exist for no reason, but that’s the only possible alternative. Anything that created the universe would fit the definition of a god. So then how can God not exist when everything clearly exists all around us? And the idea that the creator of the universe could be a conscious being, why is that impossible to believe? We live in a universe where according to science, we humans are conscious beings that evolved from the first organisms which came into being through abiogenesis, which is inanimate matter becoming a living organism (although nobody really knows how that happened). So consciousness doesn’t require magic or anything. Consciousness is obviously physically possible in our universe. Am I crazy? I don’t see how God doesn’t work.

Basically, I’m not saying that God does definitely exist, I’m just saying, I can’t think of a single reason why the existence of God is impossible or illogical.

Or when atheists say there is no afterlife because souls aren’t real. If souls aren’t real, why would that mean there is no afterlife? If you think about the cycle of life, or you think about the carbon cycle: plants absorb nutrients from the soil, then animals eat plants, and some animals eat other animals, then life dies and that nutrients goes back into the soil, and it repeats in a cycle. So if souls don’t exist and consciousness is nothing more than a physical process, and one of the laws of physics is that matter cannot be created or destroyed, only transformed, after millions of years of transformations, of matter being recycled in earths biosphere, why would you think reincarnation is impossible? What does it physically violate? Does it physically violate anything?

Then people will say life is meaningless, and that everything is random. But if you think about it, from the smallest things to the largest things, there is a cosmic order to everything that’s very obvious. Galaxies orbit each other, stars orbit around the center of a galaxy where the supermassive black hole is, planets orbit around stars, moons orbit around planets, electrons orbit around the nucleus of an atom. Everything has its place in a hierarchy, and everything is cyclic in some way. Orbits have a period, stars are born and stars die, living things are born and living things die. Governments are hierarchical, companies are hierarchical, in a bee hive, there exists a hierarchy of roles with the queen at the center. The same with ants. That seems kinda strange to just be random.
