Topic: People who say that being on your phone during family gatherings is extremely rude, fuck you.

+Anonymous A1.1 year ago #65,482

There are people there that may be lonely and just don't fit in with anyone else and/or no one really talks to them, so they are on their phones to occupy themselves.

If a guest also happens to be autistic, the phone is an important tool to cope with and get distracted from triggers that the autistic person may find upsetting. It is used to help the autistic person calm down instead of having a meltdown.

Today I learned something about autistic people. They have trouble with empathy. I didn't know that. A person displays their mood and they can't actually detect what mood they are in.

That's more of a low- and middle-functioning thing. High-functioning autists can generally tell, but may not always read it correctly.

I’m autistic and I totally understand empathy

It is RUDE. "I'm lonely, so I'm gonna avoid people more." Terrible decision-making here.

Agreed - life lesson here. It's not always fun and sometimes we have to power through things we don't like to do.

We've got a couple in the family that read books, knit, play on iPads, etc (and I'm talking the adults here). When you wonder why family isn't around later or you aren't getting invited to the BBQs, it's because we're not ATMs or bed and breakfasts. I showed up to the 2 hour gathering and managed to at least act interested (and I am, I want to see family succeed and enjoy life), I expect the same in return.

The mistake you've made was writing here. Nobody here gives a fuck because everyone has shit to deal with every hour of every day of every single waking moment that they're alive. If they dont wanna talk to you chances you're a bit insufferable to be around and nobody wants their good vibe ruined by someone who is potentially nitpicky. I mean you're here bitching on TC.

Nobody in my family talks to me much because they all have someone around their ages to talk to and I don’t and I am very underrated in my family. I’m also autistic so I don’t really fit in with anyone else. My toddler nephew MIGHT be autistic but since he’s the youngest he will obviously get lots of attention. Also I’m not insufferable so 🖕🖕🖕🖕🖕🖕🖕🖕🖕🖕

If you're engaged in antisocial / avoidance behavior how can you complain when you are treated in kind? B4 mobile phones, I trained myself to make eye contact in spite of biofeedback overload. Eye aversion was also considered rude, disrespectful and shady prior to handheld idol addiction becoming the norm. Anyway, we tend to receive as we are predisposed to receive, so treat others the way you wish to be treated and see what happens.

If it's abusive then learn how not to be like them, and prepare yourself to leave when you are able. There are resources that can help but not until you decide to do something about it.
That's all I got.

I’m autistic and I don’t fit in with anyone else. I have no one Mya he got all to. And not everyone is interested in what I have to say

I’m autistic and I don’t fit in with anyone else. I have no one my age to talk to. And not everyone is interested in what I have to say. Also I the topics that they talk about either annoy or bore me. I feel like that I don’t belong because of this. I feel like an outcast 😔😔😔

·Anonymous H1.1 year ago, 12 minutes later, 3 days after the original post[T] [B] #657,308

Sorry kid, but I've been autistic longer than Don's been wearing diapers and I don't understand why you want to fit in. I know what it is to be an outcast but I have no idea what it "feels" like to you. Poor feller

Someway this is true someway is not because there are people around you. I dont have opinion on this.
