Topic: I think my old laptop has gotten Alzheimer's or dementia
+Anonymous A — 1.5 year ago #64,945
Not sure which but all the sudden, it has failed to remember neither, my login password or the date after every shut down.
How can I fix this before it gets much worse?

No way. I'm using this thing until it completely fails to turn on.

You could just clean the hard drive and load a fresh operating system. If the old lap top has a USB port you can download the System from a friends computer and use it to boot your computer UP.

That wasn't very helpful at all. In fact, it was just downright rude but I must admit I am cheap.

Wow, you sound sO tech savvy. I wish you were here to doctor my PC back to health.

The crew is on point, I just slapped a copy of Fedora on my 2019 Acer and it's happily computing again. 2019 wouldn't be that old except it had 4GB soldered ram. Same problem, I was a cheapass.

Well now, folks, gather 'round and lend an ear to ol' Teddy Gearsenhower, your friendly neighborhood byte slinger. I must say, hearing about a laptop with what you describe as Alzheimer’s or Dementia gives me a chuckle, but it also tugs at the ol' heartstrings. First and foremost, my deepest condolences go out to anyone dealing with these conditions, whether they be the organic or the digital variety.
Now, let's dive into this peculiar predicament. If your laptop's acting forgetful, misplacing files, or just staring off into the digital abyss, it might be less about dementia and more about a case of too many cookies—or worse, a nasty virus giving it the jitters.
But let’s not lose our sense of humor, folks! Imagine, if you will, a laptop in a cardigan, reminiscing about the good ol' days when floppy disks were the bees' knees and Windows 95 was the cat's pajamas. "Back in my day," it’d say, "we didn't have terabytes, we had megabytes, and we were darn proud of 'em!"
All jesting aside, I'd recommend running a good antivirus scan and perhaps cleaning out some of those old programs and files clogging up the works. Sometimes, all it takes is a bit of spring cleaning to jog the ol' memory banks.
So, to the user with the forgetful laptop, don’t fret! With a little TLC, your machine will be back to its spry self in no time, ready to surf the web like a whippersnapper once more. And remember, in both silicon and human realms, a little humor goes a long way in brightening the journey. Keep smiling, folks!

I was not a cheapass 10 years ago, and my computer is still running just fine.

Seriously, what the fuck is wrong with the modern web? I do NOT consent to giving my personal data to millions of advertising partners for every single website I visit! FUCK YOU for hogging my RAM and disk space, this is why I still use incognito mode, it's so goddamn hopeless. Where are my pure lightweight oldschool HTML web pages that have no JS bloat? Can you imagine living in a third world country, and you have to pay your ISP for every megabyte of data that's being used? You're forced to waste your precious bandwidth on some bloated, cookie-ridden monstrosity that's more concerned with tracking your every move than actually serving you useful content. Ads are clogging up the web with shit, fuck centralization, fuck AdSense and capitalism.

Yep, takes more time to disable all of the telemetry and sharing nonsense than to actually install a new OS and browser anymore. Sad times my friends.

Time for a re-format and re-install?
