Topic: Windows 11 Bitlockergeddon is about to start
+Anonymous A — 2 years ago #64,915
More and more people are going to lose their data to Windows 11 Bitlocker. It could have happened to me, I just found out about it, so I checked and yes, it's enabled on my system. But I wasn't told and my key wasn't stored anywhere.
Save some potential heartache and open a Command Prompt with Adminstrator and perform the following command:
manage-bde -status
if you see the word "encrypted" you need to save your key, or turn off the encryption (which will take a number of hours).
Do it now, it's only going to take 20 seconds.

Isn't BitLocker only available on Pro, Enterprise, and Education editions of Windows 11? Therefore I have nothing to worry about?

No. I have the home edition. Us normal users are getting it for free.

As long as you don't forget your password it shouldn't be an issue. iOS has had encryption enabled by default for years and I've never heard of anyone having a problem with it.

It's all find and dandy, you can access your data and there aren't any problems. Then your motherboard dies. So you take out the hard drive and put it into another computer. But the other computer can't access the data because it's encrypted, and you don't know the key because you were never told the key. As for MacOS having encryption, maybe they told the user what the key was?

Macs don't have to worry about that because they just work, always, 100% of the time, forever, no exceptions, not a one.

If you want to do it graphically, just click on the Privacy & Security option in the Settings app. Is Device Encryption set to On or Off?
