HONGKONG, Thurs - Stocks closed sharply higher today, buoyed by institutional bargain-hunting after the market's recent setbacks, brokers said.
They said late specuative selling trimmed the day's gains but the Hang Seng Index still finished 29.98 points higher at 1,365.02.
The Bank of East Asia reported 1984 net profits rose to HK$142.10 million from HK$138.38 million the previous year, and brokers said the results, the first by a major Hongkong company for the period, were within expectations.
They said late specuative selling trimmed the day's gains but the Hang Seng Index still finished 29.98 points higher at 1,365.02.
