I question why you say white Americans?
My personal theory about why IPA's have become so popular from a personal basis.
Lots of USA Americans grew up on tasteless brews like Bud, Corona and Coors. Bland and decent enough to wash down spicy mexican foods etc.

IPA's have more Hops and Hops are bitter by comparison to Barley the key ingredient in real beers. Bud for instance says
"water, barley malt, rice, hops, and brewers yeast."

Real Beer which is usually based on the German Laws would NEVER allow rice. Bud uses a very small amount of pricey Hops and they pick a bland Hop variety for what they make.

Double IPA's with MORE Hops are selling very well compared to old bland Bud.

Now IPA with no rules can include Lemonade and you name the additions.

One time I wondered into a beer seminar with a room empty of people and tables with various examples of how simple it is to use the very same ingredients and end up with a very different flavor. Barley can be toasted a little to very much. The color goes from like untoasted bread to almost burnt bread. Toasting the Barley brings out the sugars and you can end up with Carmel as a result.

Hops for me were difficult to taste because they range from not so bitter to VERY Bitter. HOP growers are making a fortune these days.
God only knows what these examples taste like.

I am NO expert on Beer. I have some expertise in business and Modelo has taken over as the USA's #1 seller and it's expensive compared to Bud.

In many states there are Trader Joes Markets and they carry a couple of very good GERMAN Beers. German laws make sure the beer is the real deal and NEVER EVER any Rice and fillers. The Price of a 6 Pack is Super Good
