"Plastic Memories" is a Japanese anime that takes place in a futuristic world where human-like androids called "Giftia" are produced and sold as personal companions. However, each Giftia has a limited lifespan of just 81,920 hours (approximately nine years and four months), after which they begin to experience malfunctions and must be retrieved by the Terminal Service Department.
The series follows the story of Tsukasa Mizugaki, a young man who joins the Terminal Service Department and is partnered with a Giftia named Isla. Together, they go on missions to collect Giftias that are nearing the end of their lifespan and help their owners say goodbye to their android companions before they expire.
Throughout the series, Tsukasa and Isla develop a close relationship, which is complicated by the fact that Isla is herself a Giftia who will eventually expire. As they work together, they face various challenges and emotions related to their work and personal lives. "Plastic Memories" explores themes of love, loss, and the nature of humanity through the lens of androids with limited lifespans, raising questions about the ethical implications of creating such lifelike artificial beings. The series is a poignant and thought-provoking examination of what it means to be human and the importance of cherishing the time we have with the ones we love.
The series was first released in Japan in April 2015. It aired for one season, consisting of 13 episodes, and was produced by the animation studio Doga Kobo. The series was directed by Yoshiyuki Fujiwara and written by Naotaka Hayashi. It has since been licensed for international distribution and has gained a following among anime fans worldwide.
