It may have a calming effect for the people who are directly experiencing tragedy to pray. OP however, is not experiencing tragedy. He is simply bragging about his 'good intentions' without actually doing anything to help those are experiencing tragedy.

If he actually cared about the victims of the earthquake, he would be urging people to donate money by giving a link to the Red Cross website in the OP.
