Background checks are there to disarm regular people who made a mistake when they were young, or have a history of depression. It's there so cops can reject minorities and their allies from owning firearms, taking away their ability to defend themselves.
I don't want my children or relatives cowering from a police state that knows they can't fight back. Better to risk a 0.01% chance of dying over a guarantee of fear and submission to the almighty government.
