For me, I was able to get past the 'nice guys finish last' by going my own way. It can be lonely, but if you sort out motive, then weed out people that only take from you, you come out on the other side with a clear conscious - you know it was they that were the users, not you. I shoot down all the MLM and investment pitches I get at work and from family and friends - it's not about 'supporting their dreams' - they are bleeding friends and family for personal gain; they are the bad people. I work with a couple of guys that don't talk to me anymore after I turned down their drop shipping scams and fake suppliments hustle... I thought we were cool and had the same hobbies but they were just buttering me up for a sale. My town is small enough that I can take note of who does what for work - if they are gaining wealth off the backs of other people, I don't go to them for business (walmart is an easy one, but this goes for 'small businessmen' too).
I hate it too, I don't like being jaded and negative, but the bulk of humanity is terrible and would absolutely choose staying ahead if the 'poors' down the street had to stay poor, people in the third world still cranked out electronics and clothes in unsafe and impoverished conditions, and they can cut you off in traffic to get one car ahead.
