how do people udually gets a job in animation industry if not with fan art or derivative work? how original should their portofolio be usually?

my guess is either you do everything yourself and make a short, or get into some internship program at
disney scratch that, disney hasn't made an actual animated film in like 2 decades, better try for cartoon network
