Topic: walk cycle automation

ok, i dont post pic becuz it s general but here, imagine a bipedal creature skeleton, or quadruped, or maybe 3d rig version of it
all the legs and limbs are rigged enough with IK, but the walking isnt yet
so how do you automate the walking process so that it looks natural? my guesses are it is affected by internal and external processes but i am not sure how should it produce balance, or limps or a cycle natura enough?
