MONROE — A Monroe County woman has been charged with attempting to hire a hit man to murder her ex-husband.
Wendy Wein, 51, of South Rockwood, was arrested Friday by Michigan State Police. Troopers released details Tuesday after she was arraigned in Monroe County First District Court on charges of solicitation to commit murder and illegal use of a computer to facilitate a crime.
Judge Michael Brown set a $500,000 bond. Ms. Wein is to reappear July 29 for a probable cause hearing, then again Aug. 5 for a preliminary examination hearing. The maximum penalty for solicitation to commit murder is life in prison, while the maximum for illegal use of a computer to facilitate a crime is 20 years and/or $20,000.
State police allege Ms. Wein contacted a fictitious website, rentahitman.com, and filled out a form and requested a consultation to help her. She specified her ex-husband as the target, according to the news release.
An undercover state trooper posed as a hit man and met with Ms. Wein in South Rockwood. She offered to pay $5,000 to murder her ex, who lives in another state, and provided an up-front payment for travel expenses, according to police.
The website’s owner says he started the site in 2005 and has been contacted numerous times by people requesting murders, school shootings, and a baby abduction, state police said. He claims the website has helped prevent more than 130 murders because he refers all requests for hit men to law enforcement.
