That's what Eco would like for people to believe, is that it's a mental illness. It isn't though.
He has what is called the "Stupid Attention Whore Syndrome", or in short, SAWS.
The Stupid Attention Whore Syndrome is a person who makes up lies, pretends to be something they're not(Father Merrin falls in this category), makes constant threads about themselves(Catherine, Matt, and Eco), and claims drug addiction is a disease(Eco).
There is no known cure for SAWS, except death.
