Favorite pieces or composers? I'm a huge fan of Beethoven's late sonatas (numbers 28-32) but of course I don't have anywhere near the technique to play them (yet!). And of course my compatriots Chopin and Szymanowski (I can play some of Chopin's nocturnes and a couple of the easier etudes).

Classical? Definitely Rachmaninov. I am also no maestro but got quite far with learning his 2nd concerto and I'm determined to master it one day. I played Beethoven 1 (C Major) when I was in my teens, as well as the F Minor sonata (no. 1?)
Chopin repertoire: Raindrop prelude, waltz in E minor, C# minor polonaise & also some nocturnes.

Wow, Rachmaninov's 2nd concerto is no small feat (even those slow chiming chords that open the piece require huge finger span). Incidentally my favorite piece of all time is Rachmaninov's 3rd concerto. Not a hope of ever being able to play more than a few bars of course.

A very surprising assessment! About the relative difficulties of Rach 2 and 3 I mean. But I'll trust your take, because I've never really looked at the scores. I just know that the cadenza (the Ossia cadenza, not the 'simplified version' he later wrote) requires prodigious stamina.

As much as I love Rachmaninov's music (and can play the 18th variation of the Paganini Rhapsody) I've never attempted to play his works. One day I plan to try his wonderful 2nd sonata.
