Topic: Who wrote TinyBBS

+Cook My Own Breakfast !!IpftyHSqdT6.8 years ago #53,574

I am very interested in setting it up on my own server. Actually, many years ago the code for this was available and I did actually run it on my website for a while, but I remember the code was then removed from wherever it was hosted.

Today I've searched and searched, but it seems the code is not public. I wonder if the authors would be interested in sharing it?

Thank you! Looking through them. Most of them are very old, though.

It's not BBC you fucktard. It's BBS, which stands for Bulletin Board System (as opposed to British Broadcasting Corporation).

TinyBBS was a clone of ATBBS - no, not AnonTalk, but AnotherTalk, which was loosely based on UBB.Classic - Ultimate Bulletin Board - written by a guy called Ted O'Neill in 1996.

The most up to date PHP source code available, as far as I can see, is MiniBBS, which includes polls and other features missing from the original source.

Yep, just a typo, sorry.

Thanks for the info. Yeah, I saw that MiniBBS is up there. Most updates are like 5 years old. I mean, many things won't work with PHP 7.0, although allegedly changes to the code should be fairly trivial.

I am sure that TinyBBS is being updated.

What you really want to do is go here
https://minichan.org/chat

Contact tteh the current Sysops for minichan.org and ask him for help.
You can also go to
http://qchat.rizon.net/?channels=tinychan
And Ask eels for help

100% sure you can get all the code and more you need. Both tteh and eels are very helpful and easy to work with. They both have jobs and sites to maintain so respect that and you will end up with all you need eventually.

Most recent user of the code is Catherine who is active on the MC chat site. Not tech savvy yet with gethub code she set up couple3 BBS.

This.

Also, please rewrite in a language that doesn't suck. PHP is so last decade... century. From MiniBBS onwards it starts getting heavily object oriented. Fuck that - PHP was never intended to be more than a simple toolkit for enhancing HTML. Also, fuck MySQLi. If you're going to write classes for everything, it's time to move to Java (write a Tomcat server) or even, god forbid, Javascript (write a Node server).

I would love to have a board that isn't shit. Which means moderation and all. On the other hand, some people come to just shitpost, and so question is - does anyone need a BBS for genuine conversation?

It was basically total freedom of speech as long as the post wasn't obviously trolling and didn't contain bad grammar such as "btw" instead of "BTW". But people were allowed to discuss whatever they wanted no matter how offensive it was. AnonTalk had no tripcodes or names. The problem with most boards in general is most administrators tend to get a power kick out of moderating them and banning people... many people end up doing that (i.e. Minichan).

On the other hand, if there is zero moderation like Tinychan right now the place is fucking ruined -- by the retard that has decided to spam it with shit like a baby smearing diarrhea on the walls. He will get a kick if he reads this post since he's desperate for attention in his life. Then you've got the epitome of scum/autism that is the sad person/people constantly posting the same image over and over again and the same one liners thousands of times. These people are lacking something in their lives where they feel the need to annoy people on the internet every day and this forum has been sacrificed for their free day care.

AnonTalk wasn't designed to be spied on by multiple people every day; such as Minichan, where they're monitoring your use of the search feature, they're aware of your identity, post history, country, (real) IP address, they know exactly what you read and your comments, and the people at Minichan love checking this data constantly. AnonTalk was the total opposite of this by design. Only 1 man had access to this information and he was autistically predictable.

+Anonymous N6.8 years ago, 15 hours later, 1 day after the original post[T] [B] #567,269

For the sake of nostalgia, I'm working on a clone of Tinychan 1.0 (basically TinyBBS with 99% less features and different CSS) written in Go. I haven't started yet because I need to learn web programming. If I ever manage to do that I might make a new fork and start adding features from TinyBBS, but only ones that people actually use. Like, when was the last time you needed to click "Forget Thread" or view a "trivia_for_topic" page?

I am not sure I care about "spying". I mean, for me the selling point of being "anonymous" is not that you can post shit which you would be embarrassed to admitting to posting, but that you don't need to register. And tripcodes are a clever way of ensuring your identity to a good enough degree.

But then if I an reading you correctly, the good thing about AnonTalk was that it balanced banning disruptive members with a pretty liberal policy on topics of discussion. Which is a fair thing to want, although I do often feel that someone posting something racist and telling people to discuss it is not helpful. Some ideas I feel no longer require discussion. Like, how many times should we discuss if people's character and worth should be based on their race or sex? I feel frequently people who say this kind of thing imply that there is still a possibility we might discover that actually we should judge people's whole worth on the color of their skin or on their gender, and I just don't believe that this is the case.

And people who are pushing for such discussions are frequently people who actually are racist and sexist, but would like to be sophisticated ambassadors of their views by inseminating them under the guise of "discussion".

Having said that, I think it is possible to be very liberal on discussion topics without allowing various radical and divisive posts. While in some cases the line is not easy to draw, in the majority of cases it's not that difficult.

Looking forward to that.

I would say that if you really want to do this, you can just modify the existing PHP code. I mean, PHP is evolving and although quite a lot of criticism could be leveled against it, it is a decent language. Definitely, quite usable to write a forum. But hey - I get it. Writing something from scratch they way you want it is very rewarding.

I am totally OK with mods looking at my IP - Helps that Geo wise it ranges up to 120 miles in distance and on occasion it may be as close as 7 miles. My search history? So what.

Mods need stuff to read and if they enjoy those extras, so it be. No matter to me.
