Hope I don’t catch autism hanging out here. I’ve applied a domestos topical ointment all over, but I’m not sure it’ll keep me safe.

Father in law's back was hurting so he went to the ER. At first, they thought it was congestive heart failure, turns out it was pneumonia + sepsis. Although the cardiologist still thinks there may be something wrong with heart, but he won't know for sure until after the infection is cleared up. They did a procedure called a thoracotomy today and scooped out a bunch of jello-like gunk from around his lungs and put in three chest tubes. He's intubated and has been on a ventilator for a bit over 24hrs, but they might remove it tomorrow. We've spent most of the last couple days at the hospital and while it's still dicey atm I think he's going to be fine.
It is a little disturbing when he wakes up all confused and pulling against his restraints with all these random ass tubes coming out of him like something from 40k. He goes from being semi-coherent and able to respond by squeezing your hand or nodding, but sometimes his eyes open up and he's just staring into space and biting at the intubation tube or wtfe. Honestly, I'm not sure if it's the meds or the infection, but hopefully, the antibiotics will have it knocked down a fair bit by the time they take that tube out of him. The weird thing is he didn't seem to have any symptoms apart from the back pain.

They extubated him today, took the tube out, and with it came the largest amount of phlegm I’ve ever seen in my life. Was pretty gnarly.

Slept in today because he was doing much better last night, but apparently he was very paranoid, delusional, and combative this morning. While I was resting he grabbed his daughters hair and started trying to fight her from the bed, ripped out an arterial line and bled all over the place, was screaming unintelligible nonsense about being in a medical experiment, didn’t think his family was here, and thought he was back in Indiana. Now he’s back in restraints.
Dr called it “ICU psychosis” and said that it’s not too uncommon and could be the meds, infection, or a combination of other stressors from being in the hospital. Which when you think about it aren’t really that different in some respects to what they did torture wise in gitmo.
@566,757 (Morbid !vbsvhaneDY)
He hacked up a little more afterward, but it was nothing crazy like that ginormous glob that came out with the tube. Sadly, no pics of that.
Here’s a pic of what’s draining out of his chest tubes, not as interesting, but still neat. Believe it’s serosanguineous fluid.

That ICU psychosis thing is scary but it happens with folks. It happened in my family.
It almost always clears up soon.

It was pretty wild to witness. Were they violent when you experienced it?
He already seems a little better now that he’s on less pain meds, but maybe it’s the seroquel. Things look positive anyway. Although he is still confused and restrained.

I guess it is the worst if it is the first time you have ran into the situation..
It was for me I was not aware it would most likely sort itself out..
Hope everything gets better for you all quickly..

Much more coherent and already out of restraints, plus speech therapy is going to trial some solid food today. Things are looking up!
Although, yeah, it was fucked for a bit. Seeing him intubated and on a ventilator was bad enough, but the psychosis shit was unreal. The daughter that experienced the most violent episode just wants to forget about it and not even tell him what happened. I don't blame her.
@previous (K)
We've never had to deal with anything like this. Hopefully, we won't have to again.
Thanks for the well wishes.

Don't take his well wishes seriously. If you have an underage son/daughter, you bet your ass he will pry his way into them like the sick freak he is.
He just openly admitted to being a pedophile so you know I'm serious.

I'm glad it's going better!
My grandmother got a bad chest cold and rapidly (as in a couple weeks from totally cogent to basically a toddler) developed severe dementia just afterwards, it was fucked

Haven't had to deal with that in my own family thankfully, but seeing it in others is crazy enough. Really sorry you had to deal with that.
Not trying to be insensitive, but personally, if I get to that point and it's permanent, I hope they euthanize me.

Me too tbh. My dad and aunt are burning out taking care of their mother, while she has no hope of improvement and is expected to die within several years. It's sad.
