ah yes, this symbol is pretty familiar and common. I'll tell you what it is
basically it's an alchemy symbol that was used long long ago. Now alchemy symbols showcase the compounds used n elements, but also have other secret meanings behind it which can describe condition of your soul (if you believe this) though I can understand why you think it's cryptic and scary
now the element first is a cross which is used to represent four elements by the four arms of it, at the center lies the coniunctio, the sacred union which represents the fifth element, this union can also refer to the union of the soul, spirit, and body. Now in alchemy it gets interpreted differently, in that two opposites union together for self coniunctio, and two other different types of it are also talked about in alchemy but I'm a bit sketchy on the details
When you make the two into one, and when you make the inner like the outer and the outer like the inner, and the upper like the lower, and when you make male and female into a single one, so that the male will not be male nor the female be female, when you make eyes in place of an eye, a hand in place of a hand, a foot in place of a foot, an image in place of an image, then you will enter the Kingdom. -Gospel of Thomas

Now a cross with 4 dots in alchemy refers to distilled vinegar. But why vinegar? If we go back to the coniunctio part, you'd know that there is a union in opposites, and according to alchemists, vinegar is the "water that kills and vivifies", furthermore it is thought that it transmutes the consciousness of the body, into the consciousness of the spirit.
the circle is the symbol for universal seed.
