Think... That conversation was on Monday. Tuesday and Wednesday, instead of going to work on second, he opted to stay home and wait for the phone call. Even if he still showed up for work, that would have showed them his willingness to work.
Instead of calling them to find out, he decides to wait for them to call. Not a good sign.
