A low-end VPS would be about $5 monthly. For a good VPS you're looking at $15+/mo, or even more for a dedicated server.

For small sites, the important thing would be the speed of the network uplink. Most hosts have 1 gbit/s lines, but if you go low end, you might get a 100 mbit/s line.
