The OP doesn't bother me tbh, it's not like their meals in the wild would be any more humane. I can think of a couple arguments for feeding them like this.

You know, it reminds me of a grate Buddhist parable where this bodhisattva becomes an hero so a starving tigress and her cubs can live.

There was another story that ends differently where an individual who believed he was Christ tried to feed himself to lions. That story doesn't have as happy an ending though because the suicide attempt was foiled and led to the death of two lions. :(
