Topic: Books and stuff
+Anonymous A — 9.1 years ago #48,110
What are your personal habits on books? What do you like to read, what do you keep in stock and what do you hate, do you like new or used? Physical or digital? Buy or borrow?
Plz post I'm very interested right now in this topic.
Personally I like to read a lot of technical stuff that relates to my job. Even the non-fiction stuff that was published like 30+ years ago that while influential is common knowledge now. I prefer physical books because I've found over the years that I can remember books I read physically much better since I remember the "feel" of the book whereas digital all I remember is the mouse scroll. I don't use libraries too much since usually it's the luck of the draw and i prefer to read what I want when I want it. For most books I never read them again so I end up stuck with a stack of books that i usually give away to the local library.
edit: The two topics I have come to despise are self help books(they're nothing full of bullshit deflections and ambiguity) and popsci which is not only heavily biased because it's usually very topical but also it's frustratingly watered down most of the time for obvious reasons.
edit2: Also one of the things i despise the most in books these days is just how fucking big they are. Either through font size, spacing, or just needlessly extra wording they end up beign 4-500 page books that should've only really been 2-250. It's just too many times I've encountered books that drag on and on.

I've never read it smdh. I did read crime and punishment but thought it was overrated. It did elude desperation quite well though.

well... most things! right now i'm reading an evelyn waugh book (vile bodies) and it's exactly the sort of light-hearted stuff i want after reading dense grecoromans all semester. also constantly working on getting through the gulag archipelago but i'm
never going to finish that. just got oryx and crake in the post :o
> what do you keep in stock?
everything i can! pic related is most of them
> and what do you hate?
can't think of anything i really hated recently. oh, jane austen. i can't stand her.
> do you like new or used?
used!!!!
> Physical or digital?
why not both?
> Buy or borrow?
ideally bought from the $0.50/$1 racks at my local bookstore. borrowing is all well and good but you never feel as relaxed.
