This scenario seems somewhat unlikely for now, if the laws regarding suppressors changes, then maybe.

I mean, it's plausiable that he might be able to ~~steal~~ borrow a gun and have an accident... but would he also have a suppressor and a hankie? You can only suspend disbelief so much.

Personally, I'd just say "Oh man, I shot Marvin in the face" instead of nothing.

That someones best friend also happens to be some financial giant's CEO's relatives, and the CEO takes it as a planned assassination case against his own company, and Bert and his friend are arrested as part of the assassination plan. His poor friend knows nothing and Bert won't say a damn word, so the police put the blame on his friend as he owns that car and thus a bigger suspect. Death sentence is issued, friend is executed, but the chaos is not settled. Eventually the CEO starts pointing fingers at China corp as it is first step of their evil plan to ruin US economy. China govt step out and call it ridiculous, US govt insist the possibility and urge an investigation but China of course does not cooperate. Russian meddle in and planted some fake evidence of the plan, US bite the bait, China deny at full force, Relationship broken, WWIII begins. Both countries and their alliances send out their full force, war went for years, eventually China is losing due to all their weapons are unserious fraud and their soldiers are all corrupted thugs. China takes the forbidden measure, they force the North Korea govt to launch their nuclear weapon towards US. Bring as unserious fraud as China's missile, the nuclear missiles blown up midway and fall into the sea, leaving only a gigantic mushroom cloud and a huge radioactive field in the middle of nowhere. This hinted every country that nuclear weapon is in play, and they all bring out their secretly constructed nuclear missiles out and launching like fireworks. Within minutes, the whole world are covered by explosions, radiations, smokes, debris from broken buildings, and dead bodies. 20 years later, a lone scavenger wandering through the wasteland once known as the US Tennessee, looking for anything edible to survive another day. He walked across the bottom of a broken highway, and noticed a ragged tent just aside the highway base. He crawled in, only to find a sleeping old bum full of grey hair and beard, surrounded by countless empty booze bottles. The scavenger take a close look at the bum's face, he thinks he had seen it somewhere before. He is Bert. Despite getting old and full of wrinkles, the scavenger recalls that was the face that went on the news broadcast of that financial giant's CEO's relative assassination incident over 20 years ago. The incident that known as the trigger of the end of the world. Filled with rage and despair, the scavenger pull Bert up and thrown him out of the tent, pinned him down on the ground, but before he can lay a fist on his face, his tear breaks out first. He knows, deep down, it would not change anything. He knows the world and the humanity is already doomed, nothing can change it. The only thing he does not know, is the truth of the cause of the world destruction's beginning. He cries out loud, bury his tearful face onto Bert's chest who he's still pinning, and beg Bert, in the most hopeless and desperate voice, to tell him how, and why, all these happen, in the very first place. All he wants is the truth.
