The term hate-crime is nonsensical. You can commit a crime on the basis of hating someone, such as assault & battery, yet it may not be considered under the law as a hate crime because it you weren't necessarily hating on their skin color/ethnicity/religion/etc but rather on how ugly the guy looked or something.
