Topic: What are you thoughts on the notion of basic income?

+Anonymous A β€” 9.3 years ago #47,419

I love the idea but dont think it will work.

+πŸ‘Ή !!CKJaFnHp7 β€” 9.3 years ago, 1 minute later[T] [B] #513,868

It sounds grate, but wouldn't the prices of everything just shoot up? To me it seems like we'd see a period of rapid inflation if it happened.

Although I'm not a economist, who knows.

Economics is just speculation with fancy graphs anyway.

That's sorta what I was thinking but for stuff like alcohol since people like bert would have access to free money (tm). It's well known that the poor have some of the worst spending habits and this would probably only aggravate it.

I don't trust those shifty (((economists))) anyway, but graphs are okay.

Probably, he reminds me of lab rats taking cocaine until they die.

Extra scratch would just speed up the process.

What is "basic income"?

Isn't that just like getting a paycheck from your place of work?

Β·Anonymous D β€” 9.3 years ago, 48 minutes later, 2 hours after the original post[T] [B] #513,879

The idea is that everyone, regardless of work situation, would receive a minimum stipend of cash that would cover their living expenses in theory.

Opponents argue that this would only lead to a massive dropout of people from the labor force, it would unfairly tax those that still remain in the workforce, and the ones that most benefit from it would squander the money(code for inner city blacks blowing it on liquor.)

Proponents counter that it would lead people to choose the jobs they actually like thus increasing productivity, the taxes would be minuscule you would in theory cut a bulk of existing programs which spend more than BI would cost, and that people would harness the free time into more creative pursuits as their mental potential is freed from drudgery such as working for a living and instead let them focus on curing cancer or something.

I think the latter are extremely optimistic. More than that I find it to be a misguided attempt at solving a lot of issues at once. More so because of the fact that they're trying to implement this sort of utopic socialist idea in a capitalistic world.

I agree πŸ’― with your opinion. It's a nice idea but totally unrealistic. There are so many people who would take advantage of that. Making education free might be a better option.

Why won't both be true? It would probably work for the first few months it is implemented but the few inner city people would start to abuse it leading to more restrictions as to how much people would receive to where those who don't abuse the law would be hurt by those who do. I'm sure there would be ways of determining how much someone gets much like Welfare and Food Stamps. You don't always get the same amount each time and I say this as someone who's family was qualified for food stamps for some time. I'm surprised Bert isn't on food stamps now. I'm sure for such a system as you describe the person would be required to show bills and rent cost which allows that department to determine how much the person is entitled to or they could just go by annual income of the person. It would still be funny to hear some black woman on the bus complaining that her basic income is getting lower and screaming racism.

You're right, they can both be right to some degree.

> I'm sure there would be ways of determining how much someone gets much like Welfare and Food Stamps
I thought about this too but would this still be considered basic income? The whole point is that it's a minimum set amount of money needed to survive. Never mind that it costs different to live in a city vs a town and even that makes you wonder but if two people living in the same town get different amount of "basic" income is that fair since hypothetically one could have a better apartment and eat more food etc?

Bert probably isn't on food stamps since he's a single white male. Literally the worst demographic you could be in since food stamps were made for single black mothers in mind.

It'll be called Basic Income but would more or less just be a Welfare 4 All program. Also, my brother was the one who qualified for food stamps and he was a single white male at the time. This isn't an excuse for Bert.

That sounds very likely actually and you know what, fuck it, let's try basic income. We cannot know for sure until we try. Just make sure to have an exit strategy or else nuggets will riot.

He finds Asian women to be attractive. She is kind of childish since she is way younger than he is, but mature mentally enough. It's a good thing since she is a good test of his patience and God knows he needs more of that.

"Results
No final Mincome report was issued, but a federal grant established the Institute for Social and Economic Research at the University of Manitoba in 1981. The Institute developed a machine-readable database of the results of Mincome, leaving the analysis of the experiment to individual academic initiatives."

I could rite a book about why this type of welfare will fail.

It was in canada, syntax, in like the 1970's. Freakonomics did a podcast on it. Apparently most of the data of the actual study was so disorganized and all over the place that one of the researchers that went back to look at the town had to go through the healthcare system records rather than the actual data itself to get any sort of conclusion. Apparently from what she found was that people graduated high school at a slightly higher rate(something like 7%) and that there were more stay at home moms. Honestly though, this was when education was getting into full gear. For what cost millions it didn't seem to impressive.

They actually did the test in like the 70's in a rural all white town but the results weren't too impressive(see above). The project was halfway abandoned though so I'd be more interested to see a full study in a modern(read minority heavy) area.
