I been thinking about getting my CDL's, and I have been reading up on some of the stuff about the hours of service, and they are kind of confusing. Can you tell me what hours you have to go by? Someone told me there were only 3 sets of hours you have to follow, your driving, sleeper/off duty, and the 70 hour rule.

Can you please clarify for me? Thanks

You have 5 sets of hours you have to follow.T he 3 you listed are included.

You have your 8 hour, 10 hour, 11 hour, 14 hour, and 70 hour rules.

Your 8 hour rule : You must take a mandatory 30 minute break after being on duty for 8 hours.

Your 10 hour rule: You must be off duty for 10 consecutive hours before you can drive again, after you last logged off duty.

Your 11 hour rule: You may not drive no more than 11 hours a day(this is the tricky one, you can drive more than 11, but it depends on how you run).

Your 14 hour rule: after being on duty for 14 hours, you must take a 10 hour break before driving(just remember, you can't drive no more than 11 hours).

Your 70 hour rule: You cannot exceed 70 hours of work in a 7 day period.

Also, another thing you should remember, after being off for 48 straight hours, your 70 hour rule resets back to zero, so your 70 hour rule starts back over.

While meaning the same thing, the DOT considers "work" a different thing.

Working to them means: working on the truck, loading or unloading, or even while working at your company's yard, but while not driving.

A lot of the rules we have to follow are pretty stupid. But hey, this is what happens when you have morons, who have never driven a truck before, sit behind a desk and make up stupid rulea.

For example, the "mandatory 30 minute break," I sit in the line for fuel sometimes for 30 or more minutes, but since it's considered "working", I can't use that as my break.

And one other thing that we are supposed to do, but no one ever does....

If we are at home during off time, and we decide to cut down that tree in the front yard, we are supposed log that as "on duty, not driving."

Stupid as fuck, eh?
