Joseph ‘The Cannibal’ Metheny
Joseph was a serial killer who admitted to at least eight murders dating back to 1976. He would lure “workers of the night” into his apartment, where he would dismember them and freeze their meat for consumption. He later operated an open-pit beef stand where he would serve the meat of his victims.

Tar and Feather Victim
In case any of you ever wondered, this is what a victim of a tarring and feathering looked like. It was a terrifying form of public humiliation. After the victim is stripped down to his waist, the mob proceeds to paint the victim with pine tar (which does not burn) then pitches feathers or forces the victim to roll in the feathers until they stick. As a final indignity, the mob chases/parades the victim through the streets.

This is Terrifying and Quite Sad
This photo was taken over 20 years ago by Todd Robertson during a KKK rally in northeast Georgia. One of the boys approached a black state trooper, who was holding his riot shield on the ground. Seeing his reflection, the boy reached for the shield, and Robertson snapped the photo. I think the officer’s expression says it all.

A Letter From Jack The Ripper
Mr. Lusk, Sir, I send you half the Kidney I took from one woman and preserved it for you. The other piece I fried and ate. It was very nice. I may send you the bloody knife that took it out if you only wait a while longer.
Signed, Catch me when you can Mister Lusk

Rat King
terrifying32
“Rat King” is a phenomenon that happens when any number of rats “become stuck together with blood, dirt, ice, or feces.” This is both creepy and terrifying. I’ve seen this first-hand while working on helicopters. The rats will crawl in and band together to stay warm. As you can see, it doesn’t work too well.

Who’s in My Back Seat??
terrifying10
In 1959, Mabel Chinnery was visiting the grave of her mother in a British cemetery when she took a picture of her husband, who was waiting alone in the car. It wasn’t until Mrs. Chinnery had the film developed that they realized her husband hadn’t been waiting alone after all. The picture shows a person wearing glasses sitting in the back seat, and Mrs. Chinnery immediately recognized the figure as being her mother — the mother whose grave she had just visited.

Demon Monkey
Zengyōji temple in the city of Kanazawa is home to the mummified head of a three-faced demon. Legend has it that a resident priest discovered the mummy in a temple storage chamber in the early 18th century. Imagine his surprise. Nobody knows where the demon head came from, nor how or why it ended up in storage. The mummified head has two overlapping faces up front, with another one (resembling that of a kappa) situated in back. The temple puts the head on public display each year around the spring equinox.
