> But, the simple rules of economics are begging you: Give money to food banks, rather than food.
i have ONE principle when donating to the poor: no HARD CASH
if you give any of them cash instead of food then either fatcats skim off the top OR OR the ppl buy booze/drugs with your money

The food bank isn't the poor though. They're not in the business of being a liqour cabinet for the homeless.

Pretty much this.
@OP
Giving $100 to a food bank is not the same thing as giving $100 to a miscreant. Volunteer a few hours one weekend at a food bank or soup kitchen for the inside scoop on soup.

I usually don't give cash to the homeless with some exceptions. There's this one woman on the square who is homeless, she is perhaps one of the sweetest people I have ever seen. I always give her money whenever I can, primarily because she never asks, and I'm sure that she's on the street for mental illness and doesn't smoke, use drugs or drink.
If a homeless person is friendly, and talks to me like a person instead of a source of cash, then I'll give them anywhere from a dollar to a few bucks. If a homeless person comes up to me not seeking money and has a conversation, then I'll give them money.
