I decided to replace it with a custom crafting recipe plugin. I think part of it is broken, but the recipes still work.The materials required are still the same, but this is how you make them.
I think I finally found a decent saddle recipe for now on which incorporates both iron ingots AND string.
Grass is also a shapeless recipe by the way.

That's a good point. For some reason the overall shape always alludes me because the actual body of the item looks like freakin' paper.
