In 2017, I am going to hike the 2176 mile Appalachian Trail, although in 2014, it nearly killed me. Fucking Lyme disease......

The woods have been calling me, and its beckoning has finally won me over.

So what all is going to be in your pack and how often did you resupply last time anyway?

The usual, clothes, maps, food, cookware, stove, fuel, sleeping bag, flashlight, knife, compass(don't know why, trail is marked), book, ink pen, MP3 player, bug spray, deodorant, towel, rag, blah blah blah........

I usually carried enough food for 7 to 10 days, depending on how far apart the towns were. Water I would get along the trail.

Very cool. I'd love to see a list of the food that you are bringing.

It was rare that I would eat breakfast. If I did it would either be oatmeal, cream of wheat, dry cereal, freeze dried eggs,or a snack bar. I tended to avoid breakfast because it would weigh down on my stomach when I'm climbing a hill.

Lunch wouldn't be anything major as well, one or two slim jims, crackers, or tortilla with peanut butter.

Dinner was whatever I was in mood for, ramen noodles, Mac n cheese, mashed potatoes, or spaghetti, beef stew, chicken and mashed potatoes(The last three were freeze dried foods from Mountain House).

Then I also had GORP(granola, oatmeal raisins and peanuts mixes together) which I would snack on periodically during the day.

Every once in a while, when I made a town stop, I would pick up a small pack of chicken, and cook it over the campfire.

I would try to mix things up, but I had to watch how much weight I was carrying. It sucks climbing a steep hill with a 45 lb pack on your back.

Have done only portions of the Appalachian Trail. One unforgettable one was the unplanned hike that I started and stopped and made a phone call to wife at that time and had her fly out from Santa Monica Ca to meet me in Boston. Got more gear and back to trail head - October for Colors - So many stories and unique events including some wonderful skinny dipping in some very cold water with new friends and invites to dinners after the trip was over. I am proud of penis I have but when submerged in ICE COLD Water it was not so much so splendid - that said the other guys ended up as Turtles hiding - Remember a cute girl said she could not find any evidence of her clit but not one of us dared to suggest we look for it

So over time we did Main to Connecticut. Sections about three years in a row. Later Virginia and North n a touch of South Carolina but missed so much between prior states.Also I highly recommend you switch from Oats to Oat Bran - DOES NOT BURN as super fast and hangs with you - great with some added dried fruit. Give this a try at home first to see how you do with it. Lots of energy release if you mix it with fruit and unlike Oats which burn away faster than the speed of light - nuff said

Also now that the precooked bacon is totally available at any market and keeps if wrapped up tight - great for adding flavor boost to soups - I regret fail to test out some German potato dumplings that sounded like a winner to add to soups but took hours to cook at any altitude - In New Hampshire they never did go anything but like hard rocks - totally inedible

If you mean from the freeze dried food, it never has me, although there were times I wish it did. I've had to make numerous trips into the woods for an emergency.

@495,582 (E)

> your pack is only 45 lbs? not Bad

45 lbs ain't bad, but when you're carrying it all day, trudging up and down hills, it does start to get heavy.

@495,586 (Syntax)

> n a touch of South Carolina

What trail were you on? The Appalachian Trail does not even touch South Carolina. It wanders through Virginia, North Carolina, Tennessee, and into Georgia.

> to meet me in Boston

So, why did you travel a hundred miles or so away from the trail to Boston?

> I am proud of penis

I don't give a fuck about your penis. This is about hiking.

Jones-Gap State Park.jpg@previous (A)
Ye who sticks to any official trail misses so much. For instance I have done the John Muir Trail back n forth 4 times BUT NEVER Have officially completed it cause I refused to climb THE SO CALLED HIGHEST MOUNTAIN that is frankly over loaded with people n looks Nothing like a High Mountain when Mount Williamson is just a few feet less and is far far far more Majestic - Alas that attempt 3X to climb has been a fail cause of weather each time

I do have a world class photo of the Mountain in this office as a reminder that one need NOT accomplish every goal in life and the road2 is often much more than the end result

So back 2 ur question.

South Carolina as a start point to connect to Ur Trail: We started at at Jones Gap State Park. Mountain Bridge Wilderness Area of South Carolina. We hiked in clockwise direction towards Georgia, using the foothills trail. Crossed the Chattooga River. Climbed over the Georgia mountains, into North Carolina, through the town of Franklin, and connected with the Appalachian Trail.

Sounds like you've got it pretty well figured out and know your limits, man. Although that probably shouldn't come as a surprise since you've done the whole trail before. When are you planning on setting out next year?

Also will you be dumping any bodies alongside the trail?

And last but not least what knife are you bringing?

·The Asshole (OP) — 10 years ago, 1 hour later, 1 day after the original post[T] [B] #495,624

@previous (Antikhristos !M6R0eWkIpk)
Hoping around the middle of March.

There are a few bodies I'd like to dump beside the trail, but sadly, they aren't hiking with me.

Not sure about a knife yet. I had a Rambo knife last year, but lost it. So I'm looking for another one, but smaller.

·Anti !M6R0eWkIpk10 years ago, 3 hours later, 2 days after the original post[T] [B] #495,628

@previous (The Asshole)

Yeah, that sounds like it'd be nice time to set out.

> There are a few bodies I'd like to dump beside the trail, but sadly, they aren't hiking with me.

Did you at least invite them? It could facilitate things.

If one of them accepts the invitation it might influence which knife you choose though.

what's a body dump

·Anonymous H9.9 years ago, 41 minutes later, 5 days after the original post[T] [B] #495,854

@previous (I)
It's where bodies hit the floor. Sometimes referred to as a deadpool or mass grave. Occasionally it will only be individual bodies of course.
