@OPKūnmíng: Snow, China — February 3, 2014
I underestimated how cold Asia could be. And after two freezing winter months in Japan and China, I was eagerly awaiting my time in Kūnmíng, a.k.a. the Sunshine City, with its alleged year-round moderate weather.
I caught a cold.
Kūnmíng is filthy smelly outright disgusting. They tell me Chinese bathrooms have improved a little over the last couple of thousand years — they’re not placed over pig pens, for starters.
But not much. In urban Kunming, we explored the toilets in various local malls. All of them squats. All of them stinking.
This is probably why you see so many people squatting in the alleyways and then they carry the filth from their shoes back to the street and flies deposit the shit everywhere. Little toddlers with slits in their pants so they can squat over and do their business everywhere, even inside the isle of a market.
What really gets me is that in some places they’ll have really flash-looking public potties. A load of money spent on glazed tiles and woodwork. And then STILL a filthy smelly squat inside.

So many to chose from. How about this site. You can also use the site to search for so much more. Lots of information about the counterfeit food. A country that makes counterfeit rice, and skims cooking oil off of raw sewage. A country that is not even trying to eliminate tuberculous.

Up for special derision have been bathrooms on the ever-growing network of highways criss-crossing the province. Often little more than short cinderblock walls surrounding open pits, rest stop toilets, more often than not, are foul smelling troughs of nastiness.
Observations such as this do not only come from tourists who visit the province. Three years ago, then-governor Li Jiheng (李纪恒) deemed Yunnan's public restrooms the worst in China. He also somewhat graphically related a story in which after using a highway bathroom in Mengzi (蒙自), the stink of the place remained in his clothes for hours afterward while he attended government meetings.
