An Xbox 360 controller, because it works with every emulator I use and with Steam.

i would think trying to emulate a ds or sth with a 360 controller to be kind of difficult with the mapping

The DS emulator is kind hard to use, unless you have a touch screen to use it with. I use a 360 controller for the button mapping, and I use my laptop's touch screen for the touch screen parts. If you played a game where the touch screen wasn't required, it probably wouldn't be too bad. Most games use it, though.

I extend the display, and make my laptop screen below my monitor. Then stretch the window to size.

Yeah, I figure stores are the only place to really get one and not get screwed over, but I don't live anywhere near one so I'm pretty much SOL. I had access to a a German one for awhile, but the owner had already imported the 1 Sudowoodo forward to his nex-gen game, so that's the only Emerald exclusive I don't have between my Leaf Green and Sapphire.

Damn, too bad they didn't make it so that gen 3 supports trades with gen 2. Probably a hardware issue, I tried using a GBA cable link to trade Mew from Red to Crystal. It would not work, sometimes it would act like it was going to, then it would fail.
Come to find out you need a GBC cable link, specifically.

Yeah, I have both. According to bulbapedia, the EV or IV stuff got completely overhauled starting in Gen III so it wouldn't have been possible to make it backwards-compatible with the GB/C games. Starting with Gen IV (technically Gen III), it's possible to import Pokemon forward to the next generation, but it's a one-way-only feature. Although I think some the the import methods have been internet-based, so those services may have shut down by now.

In gen IV there was a function where you put a gen 3 game in the GBA Slot of your DS. You could transfer your party pokèmon that way. There was no way to send them back, and you have to have an original DS to do it. Since the 3DS doesn't have a GBA Slot.
