Topic: Games now are limited by the absurdly high graphics requirements
+On !Uvm54ORbmo — 10.6 years ago #44,072
I like an old saying years ago when I browse thru abandonware site:
Fun needs not 3D.
Yeah gaems liek Fallout 3/4, Elder Scroll, and Sims are grate, but it is obvious that their potential are limited due to the excessive power needed by all those fancy 3D graphics. The case is especially true in Sims 4, where the boundless neighbour once exists in 3 is removed and got revert back to Sims 2 style region loading.
Just imagine how much processing power can be saved when putting the game in 2D, and instead spend those power on further expanding the games horizon. I bet I can rebuild the whole fucking NCR in a 2D Fallout4, or build a fucking 20+ members royal family in a huge ass castle in a 2D sims, without the machine flinch a single frame.
Just look at Dwarf Fortress. They gave up on graphics, and in exchange they get fucking deep and complex mechanism which turns into limitless gameplay. I would point out Minecraft as well if that shit isnt also in 3D albeit a crude pixellated one.

Do you mean where many people are turning to Unity 5? Nevermind all of the assholes who complain when it isn't compatible with W10?
This becomes worse when older games are no longer playable for newer OS, meaning you can have a choice for one or the other.
i.e. if you want to play Fallout 3 but have a newer machine then you are fucked.

hmm could be related but not necessary
I mean ppl instead of spending the advanced machine power on expand the horizon of their gaem,
they waste shitton of it on fancy high-def 3D graphix with heavy laoding particle effects and shit
even give up the game mechanic in order to make more fancy graphix
see the examples I listed, all can be turned into 2D without affecting its gaemplay (well maybe affect the gunfights in FO), and save a lot of processing power to further make the game bigger

The 16-bit era was the gratest era in video games. That is all.

The landscape for gaming is less focused on 2D and more on 3D to compete with other companies. Indies struggle to survive in comparison because of the set standard. Some games get it absolutely right (see: Hotline Miami) but most fail otherwise and it becomes shovelware where there is more money to be made by using trading cards than the actual cost of the game itself.
This and the trend of several companies wanting to make VR headsets means 2D is becoming less relevant. Most environments in any decent side-scroller are 2-3D or whatever the word for it is. That still requires those sort of animators for it (see: Sonic). Immersion aside, I blame bad business ethics and shareholder influence usually drive the direction of most games and so expect shittier products these days for higher prices. MT is only one cancer on the gaming industry but they are obviously many more.

Sega or SNES?

I like both, I had SNES as a child. I own both now.

SNES was better for RPGs if those are things you like.

Imagine SNES or Genesis graphics but with Playstation 4 gameplay (scope-wise, not graphic-wise)
That could make some really impressive huge games

Ah right, the VR shit. It triggers me so much when I saw the minimum requirements for Occulus is a GTX 980 card. And without doubt many big game devs can't wait to jump on that VR hype trains, and further shift the game ecology to graphix focus. Fuck this shit.
Well Sonic isnt a good game to begin with, and its gameplay is pretty linear that just gotta go fast from start to finish (comparing to Mario, which is also a side-scrolling platform but with plenty of secrets to find), so it is understandable for them to put in fancy 3D to use up those excessive processing power, without sacrificing any (already shallow) gameplay mechanics. But for complex game with complex mechanics and vast possibilities, IMO they should not forfeit those potential just for fancier graphix.

A few already have, yours truly at PD2 are doing it for The Walking Dead. I expect them and others like them to fail. The difficulty being that the peripheral is not worth the cost. Why pay for a peripheral that only works for a few games that costs the same as the system itself to play on?
TWD's looks horrible. No surprise it is coming from the same people who make PD2. Have you seen StarVR's tech review?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JAxWMYfPr3o You are forced to being a person in a wheelchair, so basically on rails. Nevermind the fact that wearing a device like that on your head for some time presents all sorts of problems. Gamers want to relax, not kill themselves physically to play a game.

Since PC gaming has no standards whatsoever, it only fractures players further because all of the variables. The bugs only become worse because of it. Nobody wins in this scenario. Arkham Knight might be a good game but its shit port tainted it for people. But I agree, hurr durr graphics should not be an excuse for good gameplay.

Word, or even if they just toned it down to PS1, or N64 graphics.

Some JRPGs do this already but the rest is inexcusable. Players still want complex games.

Oh wow I didnt keep track of their TWD game, didn't realize it is VR bullshit. will watch the review now.
And yes PC gaming has no standard, but the trend is setting the standard of fucking high graphics over gameplay. That sux. At least some indie could grasp the point that good graphics != good game. And vice versa, good graphics should not be an excuse for hurr durr gameplay. Well actually, I can pass the hurr durr graphics if it is for better gameplay.
@482,734 (Dr.G Louie Ph.D !uSk4BCgU1.)
Well IIRC PS1 and N64 is already in the 3D era. I guess if it is primitive enough and does not eat up too much machine power I can pass on that as well.

If by JRPGs you mean those canned RPG maker stuff flooding Steam market then no that isnt really excusable either. Hardly anything remarkable on gameplay or mechanism, despite the lacky pixel 2D graphix.

Seems to me, the majority of people who would actually call themselves "gamers" are more than willing to sacrifice their health for more vidya.

This is true, most "gamers" these days only care about graphics. "Retro gamers" are less about graphics, and more about decent gameplay, because we grew up during the time when graphics were shit. To us, beating Ninja Gaiden is an accomplishment, to them, spending 60 hours a week on COD is an accomplishment.

As I have mentioned, Dwarf Fortress is one of the game that do it right and forfeit fancy graphix for immense gameplay mechanics. However that's one and only one, and most idiotic developers nowadays are still falling into the garphics race and dump all their resources into making fancy 4k graphix instead of making the game better. The greatness of Dwarf Fortress need to be known and spread, to let those fucking idiots know that it is gameplay that we actually want, not 3yo fooling fancy 3d graphix.

I am discussing exercise when you are physical with a game. Gamers are lazy, they don't want a "work out". People want to sit on their couch and play with their thumbs, not stand up, etc. Do you? These headsets require much interaction. Many people don't want that because it requires too much effort.
