Yes, I made one a few years ago. They are handy and very light, and they really put off some heat to boil water.

Do you prefer the soda can one or the catfood can one? I know the catfood one is slightly easier to make, but I've heard the soda can one is more versatile. Correct me if I'm wrong.

The aluminum cans are lighter, which makes it the better choice for hikers. They also put off more heat then the cat food can. I've never used the cat can, so I can't tell you from experience. But I have heard people say the cat cans tend to rust quicker when using them for cooking, along with they don't put out as much heat as a soda can does.
The only thing better with the cat can, is it's harder to damage or crush. But after putting the soda can together, it does become a little stronger.
