Released in 1997, the official debut of the Canadian anarchist collective, this is not an album I recommend to many people, because I think you have to be in a certain headspace to really appreciate this, and it's a headspace not many people have. I often define it as walking music for a loner.
There are 3 tracks on here, which run to 17, 19 and 29 minutes. The album opens with a drone, and an amazing monologue which could have been taken right out of a Cormac McCarthy novel. Such a stunning stream of imagery in this monologue of a dead and abandoned world gone to hell. That it was written by a 26 year old makes it all the more remarkable.
In fact everything about this album is remarkable. Nowadays of course post-rock is a tired genre, with a thousand bands copying the blueprint and churning out boring slabs of instrumental rock, mistaking a predictable soft-loud-soft structure for 'building tension' and all that shit. It ain't that simple. Godspeed are masters of this style, and on this album they hit their peak. It took me many years to love this record. At first I had no idea what it was and I didn't get why it was so revered. Now, about 10 years after first hearing it, I consider it my 2nd favourite album of all time.
Join me tomorrow for the #1 album and final review.
