How do you follow up a masterpiece like Dark Side of the Moon? You make an even greater masterpiece.

After Dark Side the band became unfathomably rich. Private jets, stadium tours, groupies, yachts, new car, caviar, etc. I have the guitar tab book to this album and in it there's an interview with Waters from 1975 where he talks about not knowing what to do next, after the 'dream' had been reached.

Of course the dream turned out to be not as he'd imagined, hence tracks like Welcome To The Machine and Have A Cigar, which deal with the dark side of the music industry/fame.

The heart and soul of this album is of course Shine On You Crazy Diamond, a weird and very cold 'love song' of sorts to Syd Barrett, full of sadness and mournful memories. The song charts well the despair and horror of watching a loved-one's deterioration; or more generally the decay and death of something which was once beautiful and vital. Gilmour's 4-note guitar refrain is pure longing, and Wright's keyboard work was his finest ever.

Trivia: during the recording of this album, a strange, bald, dishevelled fat guy stumbled into Abbey Road studios and stood watching David Gilmour lay down his guitar tracks for Shine On, never saying anything, just glaring at him. It was only later that Gilmour realised that stranger had been Syd Barrett.
