It's almost 12 years to the day that Elliott Smith took a knife to his own stomach and ended his torment (or, depending on whether you believe the conspiracy theory, got offed by his girlfriend, Cobain-style).
Nobody had a voice quite like Elliott Smith. Such a delicate thing which carried all the weight and pain of his lyrics. There was never anything theatrical about his misery (as illustrated by his actual suicide). He lived with some seriously haunting demons in his head and in his songs he relayed the nightmare of them, often with great poetry and even on occasion humour.
This is his greatest album, I think. It has his finest song, Between The Bars (it sounds so simple, but guitarists - try actually playing those weird chords), and also the relatively famous Say Yes and Angeles (both used in the film Good Will Hunting, that latter having some excellent finger-picking). In addition to his unique voice, he was also a supremely talented acoustic guitarist.
He is deeply missed, the world needs a voice like his now.
Favourite album of all time #4
p.s, trivia time: In 1997, Smith was nominated for an Oscar for his song Miss Misery, used in Good Will Hunting. He gave a very nervous performance of it at the ceremony (you can YT it). He lost out to My Heart Will Go On from Titanic. Madonna presented the award, having won the previous year for Evita. To her credit she made it abundantly clear what a bullshit decision she thought it was that Miss Misery didn't win.
