Topic: Album review #45; Top 10 Albums of All Time #5: Pink Floyd, Dark Side of the Moon

+Review Guy !lp7gpoTp6Y10.8 years ago #43,361

Dark_Side_of_the_Moon.pngInto the top 5 now, serious business, which warrants I think some album art. And what better way to begin than with the most recognisable album art in rock music history.

In 1972, Pink Floyd released an album called 'More' a sountrack album consisting of largely crap mood music and a few half-baked ballads (plus one great rocker called The Nile Song). Less than a year later came Dark Side of the Moon. At no other point in any band's discography has there been such a quantum leap in quality from one album to the next.

It would be nonsense to talk about highlights here. The entire album should be listened to as one 42-minute piece. Preferably through good headphones. While watching the Wizard of Oz.

But personally, it is Rick Wright's Great Gig In The Sky which forms the centrepiece for me. Clare Torry's orgasmic screaming serves as great counterpoint to Wright's wonderful chord progressions.

Favourite album of all time #5

p.s: some trivia about this album - the spoken word parts are interviews which Roger Waters conducted in and around Abbey Road Studios, where he asked various people questions like 'do you ever worry about going mad?' (to which one guy replied "I've been mad for fucking years, absolutely years..." You can hear it at the start of the album), and 'have you ever had a fight, and were you in the right?' ("I definitely was in the right, that guy was cruising for a bruising" you can hear one girl say at the end Money). Paul McCartney was, at that time, recording with Wings in the adjacent studio, and Waters interviewed him too, but didn't use any of his answers because he felt the best answers came from 'regular' people, i.e people who were not used to giving interviews, and therefore were more natural and honest.

I like this album, but I sometimes hate how most of it flows into it's self. Mostly when I'm listening to music on shuffle. Makes me have to either skip the track, or listen to the whole album. All the right songs are free of this problem, though.

It was conceived to be 2 continuous pieces of music, each filling one side of an LP without any breaks. Thus, the only pause is between Great Gig In The Sky (end of Side 1) and Money (start of Side 2). It was made in the blessed, glorious era of albums, LPs, records, call them what you will, it amounts to the same thing - a human engagement with the music listening process.

Visionaries though Floyd were, they couldn't have imagined music would one day be reduced to what it now is - inattentive people flicking through an ipod to listen to an inferior quality recording of a song, barely even aware it was meant to be listened to as part of an album.

1298420360866525.jpgI think More was probably ruined by the fact that it was released as a soundtrack rather than an album proper. It isn't all that bad in my opinion, but the sound quality suffers from what was likely a budget studio and rushed mastering.

I could spend hours on this subject. The music was first made available for live performances and later released as an album.
Studio wise it was heavily produced in a top notch studio with new innovated stuff.

Mastering was well it was. Got places to go so I will end it here for now.

Got to see this live far to many times and details off chan not on chan.

Music live was different re tempo and more - Usually as you no its common to record music in a studio and then go through hell trying to make it the same live.

This one was the opposite.

Got to:

Which album are you talking about here, Dark Side or More? Because while it's true the whole Dark Side of the Moon piece was played live before it was recorded (as were other later works like Dogs, Sheep, and Shine On You Crazy Diamond), in fact I have a few great bootlegs from 1972 of them performing the album, I'm pretty sure the More material was never performed live before being recorded. I could be wrong though.

True, most of those kind of people don't even really listen to Pink Floyd, which is a shame.

I love pink Floyd. However, I did not care much for the Animals album.

The Endless River album, which is mostly instrumental, except for "Louder Than Words", isn't to bad. Its pretty good for me to listen to while cruising down the highway.

I can listen to animals in bits and pieces. Endless River is alright, not what I expected, but not bad.

@previous (Dr.G Louie Ph.D !uSk4BCgU1.)

Yep... On a scale of 1 to 10, I'd have to roughly give it a 6.

Some of the music had some good tunes, but they weren't long enough to enjoy. Ebb and Flow would have been better if it was more than a minute and a half.

Yeah, I hate it when artists write a really good song, that ends up being really short. Kind of feels like you got gipped.

> Which album are you talking about here, Dark Side or More?
Dark Side.

I was so much in a rush with seconds b4 leaving and did a sloppy skim read of FuckAlms reply so my reply was really out of order. I was involved in more ways then I care to explain about Dark Side and no absolutely no involvement in "More"

I was over my head with work re invention of Laser recording/playback with the strange relationship of this being owned and pushed by a movie studio. Weird tie ins never intended that ended up with things that made the live performances better then prior technology and mastering on the tape side that required several unique advancements. A lot of class act engineers in the mix on both sides of the pond.

There is a book out on the making of Dark Side which ended up making for even more hurt feelings between the members of the band. Crying shame.

Wood really be nice for someone like Alan Parsons to lead a team of engineers to write about the engineering of the album - problems solved to first perform it without speakers blowing up and the advances in mastering for disk as well as a couple of breakthroughs to reproduce with tape duplicators. Bottom line so much went into the engineering to make the most advanced product.

Like I said could spend hours - Great memories about a business I wanted no part in because at the time I felt it was a waste of my engineering talent -

That's one of the better songs on the album. It has a few really good songs, like "One of my Turns", "The Trial", and "Waiting for the Worms". I'm just not a fan of waters, he's a whiner.

Waters is a special kind of whiner though, he whines incessantly, and wants everyone to know he's whining. Not mention his ass backwards agendas. He's really nothing like the other members of the band.
