The shitty iphone pic doesn't do it justice. It's this, a Lion Steel SR1. The blade is D2 steel and it uses a framelock with a lockbar stabalizer, so it can preform heavy duty tasks. Basically it cuts things like OP, fingers, paper, tape, cardboard, etc, very well, and because of the steel it has excellent edge retention and doesn't need to be sharpened too regularly to keep a shaving edge.

Yeah, most knives don't function as twitter machines or toasters. That's why we have computers, smartphones, tablets, and toasters. See a knife is used to cut things. This may explain it better for you:

A knife works because it is a combination of two of the six simple
machines. The 6 simple machines which make up most machines are; levers,
pulleys, wheels-and-axles, screws, ramps (or inclined planes) and wedges.
These simple machines provide either a force advantage (making it easier to
move a mass) or a speed advantage (moving the mass over a greater distance
than the effort force travels).

A knife works as a combination of a wedge and a class 2 lever (depending on
how you are using it). The blade of the knife is an excellent example of a
wedge, which is like a double-sided ramp. Each side of the knife blade
carries part of the load (whatever mass you are cutting) along it. The
longer the ramp (or wedge) the easier it is to move that load. Since both
sides of the blade are sharpened (making them ramps) both sides help to
move the mass along the edges of the blade. This helps you to move the
sharp edge of a blade through an object fairly easily. The sharper the
knife, the more defined the wedge, and the easier it is to cut things with.

By resting the point on a cutting board, placing the object to be cut under
the blade near the point, and pushing down on the handle, you are also
using the knife as a class two lever. A class 2 lever gives the user a
force advantage by transferring most of the load of the object being cut to
the point of the knife, instead of along the length to the handle (where
you apply your effort force. This is how famous TV chefs (like Emil;
"BAM!") are able to chop vegetables with those lightning fast moves. They
are using the knife in the most efficient way possible (they actually teach
you these things in most Chef-Prep courses). By combining this technique
with the wedge shape of the blade, you get twice the force advantage!

A knife with a serrated edge (like a steak knife) works a little
differently. Each serrated portion acts as a wedge in a stronger format
(the arch is the strongest shape known to science). This not only makes
the knife blade more rigid, but it also increases the surface area of the
wedge. This decreases the amount of force needed to cut through the object
compared with what you would need with a regular knife.

I know..
look the reasons I gave for it not being special were just off the top of my head...I had to back up my dime a dozen comment...which I should not have made in your thread anyway...sorry..

we have this cable show which airs late at night once a week where some guy sells knives...a whole bunch of knives...sometimes collections in which there are several dozen knives..

I like the show...and he makes the knives sound awesome but I know if he's selling a collection with ninety nine knives in it and it only costs one hundred and forty bucks...that several if not all of the knives are going to be crap (in stark comparison to how he was representing them)..

anyways...your knife looks nice enough...I would carry one like it..

Those knives are generally all garbage though. There's people who like knives and people who are into knives, I wouldn't pick up a knife from QVC or wtfe. I like custom and high quality midtech and production knives, but I'll still carry a well made $30-50 knife from Ontario, Spyderco, Kershaw, etc just as well as I'll carry a $200 one. Some are better made, some are special for different reasons, some are rare, some just have value because your personally like it, or perhaps it was your fathers knife, stuff like that. They're just tools at the end of the day, that one just happens to be aesthetically pleasing to me. It's a high end knife, but it's not like a Chris Reeves Umnumzaan or something.

Is that an old Benchmade mini-Ambush or the full sized Ambush? It's hard to tell from the pic. I picked up a BM Ambush for like under $30 bucks back when BM still had their red class. Not a bad knife, although they sell for about as much as a mini-grip nowadays since they were discontinued. I just got rid of my last BMs, gave away a 530, then sold a mini-barrage and a mini-griptilian to finance a custom knife purchase. Some of the newer Benchmades look promising though.

Here's more random knives. Already got rid of the Endura 4 and will probably get rid of the Fox 478 too.

I forget what model it is, yeah, it's at least 10 years old. It's one of the Mel Pardue designs.

edit: I just Jewoogled it, it is an ambush , I'm pretty sure it's not a mini.

It does feel nice. Stonewashed CPM S35VN steel, one of the better steels on the market, and a sexy titanium frame... the blade shape is a bit unusual though, which is what first attracted me to it.

@previous (Dr.G Louie Ph.D !uSk4BCgU1.)
I've owned several knives designed by Mel Pardue and the full sized Ambush was a beast, mine didn't have the combo edge though. I don't even remember why I got rid of it... that must've been in like 2010. Oh well, I mostly use Ontario for my beater knives now. IIRC the Ambush used AUS8 steel with aluminium handles. AUS8 is an okay steel, you can get it ridiculously sharp, it just doesn't hold an edge as well as some other steels. Your edge looks like it needs a little TLC, but it wouldn't take much work to get it razor sharp again, although sharpening serrations is annoying.

Word, it never takes me long to get it sharp, just a tedious task. I could send it to BM, and have them replace the blade with a higher quality steel for like $20. This was my dad's every day knife, though. I inherited it after he passed, so I don't really want to change the blade.

·Anonymous A (OP) — 10.8 years ago, 53 minutes later, 1 day after the original post[T] [B] #472,992

@previous (Dr.G Louie Ph.D !uSk4BCgU1.)eal
With Benchmade's Lifesharp program, it's like $25 bucks now, and they don't sharpen serrations iirc, they won't replace the blade with a higher quality steel afaik, especially on a discontinued model. I don't think the Ambushes came out in anything apart from AUS8, but there weren't any real high end steels being used in their red class or economy line to begin with. Benchmade's warranty isn't terrible though.

Still, if it was your father's knife, it has generational value, and a little character on a knife isn't a bad thing. If you know what you're doing, sharpening the plain edge portion should be fairly simple. Just don't use pull through sharpeners or electric sharpeners, they'll destroy knives. This is a good starter sharpening system unless you're comfortable with freehanding it on whetstones, with that set you should have it back to a nice edge in maybe 10 minutes. I usually only freehand when I strop, because the precision you get with a sharpening system makes sure you get a nice consistent edge and you're not working against yourself by coming at it at slightly different angles. The previously mentioned set, or if you already have a bench grinder, a paper wheel and some polishing rouge, can do wonders on older or neglected knives. I use CLP breakfree or Tufglide, but just plain old mineral oil can help extend the life of the blade, you might want to apply something like that to slow down and prevent any further corrosion and to lubricate the knife. It'll outlast you with a little care.
