To most people the name Dire Straits conjures unpleasant memories of ubiquitous naff 80s dad-rock fluff like Money For Nothing and Walk Of Life.
But before Brothers In Arms broke all manner of records in 1985, this scruffy bunch of middle-class Brits quietly put out 4 relatively unknown records, each of which is a masterpiece of classy song-writing and virtuoso playing.
Love Over Gold contains only 5 tracks, and the first - Telegraph Road - is in my opinion among the top 3 songs ever written. 15 minutes of pure story-telling genius, told to a symphonic stucture of music. At the heart of it all is of course Mark Knopfler's guitar, which has 3 long solos in this one song alone, the last one running to 5 minutes length; surely the longest guitar solo ever in a mainstream, non-instrumental song?
Private Investigations is the most well-known track here, with its famous piano ending. It Never Rains is the other highlight, with yet another twisting solo, this time on the Gibson, not the Fender, to close the album out.
7th favourite album of all time.
