Topic: Album review #41; Top 10 Albums of All Time #9: Genesis, Abacab

Probably the most divisive release in the band's entire catalogue, this album is ofted cited as the beginning of Phil Collins' reign of pop terror over the former titans of the prog genre. Personally I think that's horse-shit. This bizarre, unique album is every bit as experimental and progressive as any of the Gabriel-era records.
Opener Abacab and the mini-epic Dodo/Lurker are the most obviously progressive tracks here, but check out Me And Sarah Jane, an amazing composition, with something like an AABBCCDDEEFF structure. I for one have never heard anything like this song, where themes are repeated twice and then never heard from again.
Keep It Dark is another highlight, with Phil's (at that time) pioneering use of triggered snare and even electronic percussion (which he'd end up using most brilliantly on his solo track In The Air Tonight).
This was originally planned as a double album, and 6 tracks were left off. They used to be very hard to find, but now with the internet it's easy. Of these discarded songs, Submarine, You Might Recall and Paperlate are also superb.
The most under-rated album of the band's career, and also their finest.
9th favourite album of all time.

I'm curious, is Images and Words on this top 10 list?
