Beginning the all-time top 10 count down is Pink Floyd's 1979 rock opera The Wall, conceived back in 1977 when Roger Waters lost his temper at the Montreal Stadium and spat at a fan. From there was born the idea of literally building a wall between the band and the fans, to symbolise the many levels of detachment he felt had been created between the band and the joy of making music.
In my opinion this is far from Floyd's best album, but it is the greatest concept album ever written. The theme is one which anyone can relate to at some point in their lives, I mean that of alienation, and how isolation is a psychologically unhealthy state and can breed sickness and monsters in your mind (take note Doc/Shitchanguy!). And by the standards of overblown prog rock concept albums, it's unusually well written and coherent.
Musically, the high points are as high as the band ever got. Comfortably Numb is of course a classic, and tracks like Hey You, Nobody Home, Waiting For The Worms, Another Brick in the Wall Parts 1, 2, 3, and the simply brilliant Mother are the centrepieces.
Everything from here on is a 10/10, so instead I'll say:
10th best album of all time.
